Wildlife in Alaska
Posted May 6th, 2008 by Justin
As a quick update, we need to catch up on our posts to include Homer & Seward. Before that, though, we thought we would do a special feature on Alaskan wildlife. We keep seeing flyers for "wildlife viewing tours," where you pay someone too much money to go on a hike where you *might* get to see local wildlife. Granted, we just shelled out for a tour of Resurrection Bay out of Seward, but that's just because the park (and the marine life therein) aren't viewable by car.
In taking our long, scenic approach, however, we've seen quite a lot of wildlife. Here is a quick summary, alphabetized for easy reference (my idea to alphabetize... Cara is making fun of me):
- Bald Eagle - Flying around in Homer & Kenai Peninsula. Too many to count, but breathtaking everytime.
- Bison - along Alcan, between Liard Hot Springs and Watson Lake
- Brown Bear (aka grizzly) - Walking across half frozen swampy mud flat in Yukon, near Haines Junction
- Bighorn Sheep - On rocks by the road in British Columbia, through Summit Pass
- Caribou - On the road in British Columbia, through Summit Pass
- Dall Porpoise - Racing with the tour boat on Kenai Fjords Tour
- Moose - Homer. Two eating flowers in a front yard and one ambling across the road we were walking on.
- Mosquitos - We've only seen a few, but they are monsters. Humongo. They could easily kill a zebra finch, which is probably why there are no wild zebra finches here.
- Mountain Goats - on rocks along Turnagain Arm, south of Anchorage and on Kenai Fjords Tour
- Orca - saw a pod of whales on Kenai Fjords Tour
- Ravens - everywhere.
- Sea otters - diving for shellfish and eating along the waterfront in Seward & on the Kenai Fjords tour
- Shorebirds - lots of 'em in Homer and Seward.
