Day Five: Ferndale, Washington to Robert's Roost, Quesna, B.C.

Trying to write a quick post as our campsite has free wireless...but we've got to get a move on! Our hotel was just 20 miles south of the Canadian border, so we got through customs yesterday answering the obligatory questions of who we were, where we were going, where we went to school/worked, whether or not we owned the car...all while the guy ran our passports through the system. The entrance into Canada was fairly simple, although there was more intense questioning than I expected, similar to entry into other countries like UK and Ireland. But watching the long line of people waiting to get into the U.S, mostly locals it looked like, and the cameras everywhere and blockades and hoopla surrounding the US entrance...oi it was baffling. Sigh.
Drove most of the day, through a mountain pass that closes in the winter. Hit some snow flurries and cooold temps in the pass. But nice and warm in the car and beautiful views :)
Stopped at a Visitor's Center to ask about camping, turns out you can camp anywhere in B.C. except where it's posted otherwise. But we decided on a more established campground near Quesna, B.C. Neat little place. Recently purchased by a young couple with small children as an investment, but it turns out the season this year, their first year owning the place, is a month and a half late as the lakes are all still frozen. There are a few hardy RVers here, and one other tent camper. A young guy who hitchhiked from Vancouver. Apparently he and some "compatriots" (the accents and word choice up here are CRAZY funny to us!) will be planting trees in the area in the coming weeks. I'm guessing surrounding earth day?
We had some sun yesterday evening so took a walk in the neighborhood surrounding the lake. A little white friendly dog adopted us, followed us all the way home. He had a collar and belongs in the area we think, and after we stopped to make dinner he grew bored of us and headed on his way.
Had some trouble with dinner. It was growing way cold, and then our propane fueled Coleman stopped working! We were cold, hungry and couldn't get the damn thing to work. Argh. Turns out moisture from the rain two days before had clogged the line, and after hanging it to dry out and running propane pressure through it a couple times it cleared up and began working. Dinner of black beans, green chile and tortilla. So good and warm and hearty!
Lastly, Shanna and Brenna we saw your comments and it made us so happy! Thanks for the warm wishes :)
