Cara and Justin

party of two

First impressions:

We fly over the pyramids as we are coming in at sunset. Picturesque and amazing if you ignore the fact that the glow surrounding the pyramids is actually pollution. Still amazing to be seeing such ancient structures still standing... Cairo is HUGE. (18 million people huge, all squished into a relatively small amount of land). As we drive through on the way to Zamalek (the neighborhod the student housing is in) we pass numerous huge and beautiful mosques and churches which are remarkably similar in style, despite the different symbols at the top of the spires. So beautiful in their Arab style architecture. There are actually trees and plants here, as compared to Amman which felt like there were none. I know more Arabic than i rememebered, but not NEARLY enough. And not the right kind either. Jordanian colloquial is very different, as is the formal language i've been taught. Our neighborhood is very nice. Affluent and used to seeing American students. Although it may not be true reality in Cairo, it will be a nice retreat. I'm so excited!
